Prof. Sergio Ferreira describes his research into Alzheimer's disease. Investigating into how the attack of small aggregates of Aβ oligomers causes dysfunction in communication between neurons. To understand the underlying mechanisms of dysfunctional synapses, Prof. Sergio Ferreira utilises techniques such as cell culturing, animal models and behavioural studies.

Prof. Sergio Ferreira is a Full Professor at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the National Order of Scientific Merit (Comendador class), Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trust Latin American Program in the Biomedical Sciences, and International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
