Dr. Mukesh Kumar, of the University of Hawaii, has developed a guinea pig model for Zika virus infection, a critical step in understanding the pathogenesis of the virus. Zika virus infection has been linked to development of severe fetal abnormalities including stillbirth and microcephaly. The development of this new animal model aims to elucidate the process by which these conditions occur.
